LRBC FC 3 – 3 Westcliff Baptist FC

Our most recent game came against Westcliff Baptist Church (the old enemy). A good spirited game was played out in typical competitive style. Without our normal team, we lacked experience with Alex Goodman, Alex Todd, Anthony Bird and Gregory Taylor the only regulars. It took a while for the team to gel, the first 20 minutes saw us go 1 – 0 down to a neat finish by one of Westcliff’s front men. Throughout the first half there was heavy rain and the standard of football wasn’t at its best. Though it wasn’t all bad when a magic of brilliance saw us equalise. Anthony Bird ran down the right wing, crossing to the edge of the box only for Gregory Taylor to score a magnificent 20 yard volley into the top corner. It flipped the game on its head and gave us great confidence going into the second half. Though our confidence was soon broken when Westcliff regained the lead with another crisp finish. 2 – 1 down, we needed a goal, and quick. Alex Todd provided it, from 15 yards out he hit a chip over the oncoming keeper with the outside of his boot to level the game. The game was scrappy for most of the second half, but finally we took the lead. A through ball provided by the number 7 Gregory Taylor, was smashed home by Jon Howley. Surely we could hold on to win it, with the last kick of the game a long throw into our box wasn’t cleared and they equalised. It summed up the match, quite unpredictable. A 3 – 3 draw seemed fair for both sides, it was a great performance for a team that had never played together before, well done lads, bring on the next match!
